Punjab government announces release of 100 more Tehreek-e-Libek workers

Cabinet Committee meeting chaired by Law Minister Raja Basharat approves removal of 90 names from Fourth Schedule

LAHORE: The Punjab government has approved the release of 100 more members of Tehreek-e-Libek and removal of 90 names from the Fourth Schedule. The meeting chaired by Law Minister Raja Basharat discussed issues related to Tehreek-e-Libek and the government's agreement. The meeting reviewed the decisions of the steering committee on Tehreek-e-Libek and approved the release of 100 more Tehreek-e-Libek workers.

The Punjab government has also approved the removal of 90 names of Tehreek-e-Libek from the list of the Fourth Schedule. According to the Punjab Home Department, the meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary Home Zafar Nasrullah, IG Punjab Rao Sardar and others. In it, the government promised to release the arrested activists and leaders of the organization if they returned peacefully after ending the long march.

The committee formed by the government for the talks included Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Speaker National Assembly Asad Qaiser, Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman and Ali Muhammad Khan, while Mufti Muhammad Umair, Allama Ghulam Abbas Faizi and Hafiz Muhammad Hafeez from Tehreek-e-Labeek Pakistan participated in the negotiations. Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman, former chairman of Ruwit-e-Hilal Committee, was appointed mediator in the agreement.

Speaking at a press conference after the agreement, Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman said that the agreement reached between the committee and the TLP had the support of Hafiz Saad Rizvi, the head of the organization. A steering committee headed by Federal Minister Ali Muhammad Khan was formed to oversee the deal, which included no one won or lost, including Punjab Law Minister Raja Basharat, Punjab Home Secretary, Mufti Ghulam Ghous Baghdadi and Hafizullah Qalbi.

The petition against the detention of Saad Rizvi was withdrawn and the matter was disposed of by the Lahore High Court

The petition filed in the Lahore High Court for the release of Saad Rizvi, the leader of Tehreek-e-Lubaik Pakistan, has been disposed of by the court on the basis of withdrawal.

Saad Rizvi was arrested in April this year and is still in custody.

On Thursday, Saad Rizvi's uncle's lawyer Burhan Moazzam told the Lahore High Court that his "application has become ineffective".

It may be recalled that the court had yesterday sought arguments on the admissibility of the petition, but Saad Rizvi's lawyer Mian Pervez had sought respite from the court saying that matters were being settled with the government in this regard.

Who is Saad Rizvi?

After Khadim Rizvi's demise, his party's 18-part shura last year delegated his child Saad Rizvi as the new head of Tehreek-e-Libek, reported by the party's focal vice president Syed Zaheerul Hassan Shah at the memorial service.

At Khadim Rizvi's burial service in Lahore, his child Saad Rizvi emphasized his dad's obligation to proceed with his main goal.

Saad Rizvi was a student of Dars Nizami at his father's Madrasa Abu Dharr Ghaffari in Lahore. Dars Nizami is equivalent to MA education.

According to his close friends, Saad has close ties with college and university students.

He has a special interest in poetry and most importantly, he is well aware of the importance of social media in modern times and runs his personal accounts on Facebook and Twitter.

Can Saad Rizvi be released on the basis of agreement?

One of the main demands of the Lubbock movement has been the release of its emir, Saad Rizvi, who has been in custody since April this year.

Speaking to the BBC recently, Punjab Advocate General Ahmed Owais said that the government could not remove Tehreek-e-Libek from the list of banned parties by mere agreement, nor could Saad Rizvi be released.

He said that the leader of Tehreek-e-Libek was not detained under the pretext of disturbing the peace but his detention was carried out under the Anti-Terrorism Act and the courts would decide on the matter.

It may be recalled that the Lahore High Court had ordered the lifting of Saad Rizvi's detention. However, the Punjab government appealed to the Supreme Court against the decision, which annulled the detention order and remanded the matter to the Lahore High Court. He had also sent an order that a division bench of the Lahore High Court should look into the matter.

Background of Saad Rizvi's arrest

It may be recalled that Amir Saad Rizvi of Tehreek-e-Libek, who had threatened a long march towards Islamabad if the French ambassador was not deported by April 20 on the issue of blasphemous sketches of the Prophet of Islam, was detained by Lahore police in mid-April. I took it and they are still under arrest.

After the arrest of Saad Rizvi, the Tehreek-e-Libek launched a series of protests in several cities across the country, killing at least four policemen and injuring hundreds more.

The government had reached a four-point agreement with Khadim Hussain Rizvi, former head of Tehreek-e-Lubaik Pakistan, who staged a sit-in in Islamabad on November 16, 2020, demanding the deportation of the French ambassador. After the arrangement, the French diplomat must be expelled.

Following the non-execution of this arrangement, one more understanding was reached between the party and the public authority in February 2021, giving the public authority until April 20 to conform to the French diplomat's extradition guarantee.
