Mumbai: Bollywood legend Dilip Kumar has passed away recently. The
issue of changing his name after his death came up for discussion once again
and people started talking about the reasons behind it. Regardless of these
reasons, Dilip Kumar was not the only Bollywood actor who changed his name from
Muhammad Yusuf Khan to Dilip Kumar. Apart from Dilip Kumar, many actors and
actresses were forced to give up their Muslim names and adopt Hindu names, the
list of which is as follows:
Meena Kumari (Mehjabin Bano)
1) Meena Kumari's real name was Mahjabin Bano. Dilip Kumar is called the king of tragedy while Meena Kumari is called the queen of tragedy. Director Vijay Bhatt changed the name of Mahjabin Banu to Baby Meena in 1939. She was a child star at the time. Later she became Meena Kumari by the same name.
2) Dilip Kumar (Mohammad Yusuf Khan)
Muhammad Yusuf Khan, from a Pashtun family in Peshawar, started working in the script department of Bombay Talkies and stepped into the field of acting after meeting Devika Rani. It is said that it was Devika Rani who requested Muhammad Yusuf Khan to change his name to Dilip Kumar.
3) Arjun (Feroz Khan)
Arjun's real name was Feroz Khan, who is famous for his role in the Mahabharata. His on-screen name was Arjun. When he gained unparalleled fame because of this character, he adopted the same name.
Zakaria Khan was also born in 1915 to a Pashtun family in Peshawar. He
entered the film world in 1935. His name was also changed to Jayant by director
Vijay Bhatt. Leading Bollywood actor Amjad Khan (Gabhar Singh of the film
Sholay) is the son of Zakaria Khan.
5) Madhubala (Mumtaz Jahan Dehlavi)
Bollywood legend Madhubala's real name is Mumtaz Jahan Dehlavi. Madhubala was also born in 1933 to a Pashtun family in Swabi (Pakistan). Madhubala is also called the 'Venus' of Indian cinema because of her beauty and attractiveness.
